Homeschool 2nd grade: a simple weekly math and reading schedule
What to cover in homeschool 2nd grade math and reading, with a sample weekly schedule and tips for short, focused lessons.
Second grade lessons do not need to fill a whole school day. Most families find that one to two hours of focused work covers the core subjects, with plenty of time left for reading, play and projects.

- Adding and subtracting within 100, using place value strategies.
- One- and two-step word problems.
- Place value up to 1,000.
- Money (coins and dollars) and telling time to five minutes.
- Measuring length in inches, feet, centimeters and meters.
- Early multiplication ideas: arrays and repeated addition.
What to cover in reading
- Phonics for longer words: vowel teams, prefixes and suffixes.
- Reading fluently and with expression.
- Retelling stories and describing characters.
- Reading short nonfiction and finding the main topic.
- Learning new vocabulary from context.
