How to introduce multiplication in Grade 2
How Grade 2 children start learning multiplication through skip counting, equal groups, arrays and repeated addition, with simple activities to try.
In most US schools, formal multiplication facts come in Grade 3. But Grade 2 lays the groundwork with skip counting, equal groups, arrays and repeated addition. Getting these ideas right makes Grade 3 much easier.
Skip counting
Grade 2 children practise counting in 2s, 5s, 10s and 100s. Skip counting is the first step towards multiplication facts. Count objects in pairs, count nickels in 5s, and count dimes in 10s.
Equal groups
Put out 3 cups with 4 buttons in each. Ask: "How many cups? How many in each cup? How many altogether?" Children can count, skip count or add to find the total.
Arrays and repeated addition
Grade 2 children work with arrays of up to 5 rows and 5 columns. For an array of 3 rows of 5, they write an addition sentence: 5 + 5 + 5 = 15. This is repeated addition, and it is how multiplication will be introduced next year.
Odd and even numbers
Children also learn to tell whether a group has an odd or even number of objects, by pairing them up or counting in 2s. Even numbers can be written as a double: 8 = 4 + 4.
Activities to try
- Build arrays with stickers, coins or snacks.
- Look for arrays at home: egg boxes, muffin trays, windows.
- Count in 5s using the minute marks on a clock.
- Sort socks into pairs to practise counting in 2s.
Should I teach the × sign?
If your child is curious and confident with repeated addition, it is fine to show that 5 + 5 + 5 can be written as 3 × 5. Keep the focus on understanding that it means 3 groups of 5.
