What does Grade 2 reading cover? A guide for parents
An overview of the reading skills children work on in US Grade 2, from fluency and phonics to comprehension and nonfiction.
Grade 2 is when many children move from learning to read towards reading to learn. In most US schools, the year covers these areas.
Phonics and word skills
Children continue to decode longer words, including vowel teams (like "ai" and "ee"), common prefixes and suffixes, and two-syllable words.
Fluency
Reading with accuracy, at a steady pace and with expression. Reading aloud and rereading familiar texts both help.
Comprehension of stories
Retelling stories, describing characters, and understanding the beginning, middle and end. Children also start to identify a lesson or message.
Comprehension of nonfiction
Finding the main topic of a passage, answering who, what, where, when, why and how questions, and using text features like headings, captions and bold words.
Vocabulary
Working out word meanings from context, and learning words from science and social studies topics.
How to help at home
Read together every day, mix stories with short nonfiction, and ask questions as you go. Ten focused minutes is valuable.
