US grades vs UK year groups: which worksheets fit your child?

How US Grade 2 and Grade 3 compare with UK, Australian and other school years, and how to choose the right level of worksheet.

Many printable worksheets use US grade levels. If your child is in school outside the US, the labels can be confusing. Here is a rough guide.

Ages by grade

  • US Grade 2: usually ages 7 to 8.
  • US Grade 3: usually ages 8 to 9.

Rough equivalents

  • England and Wales: Grade 2 is roughly Year 3, and Grade 3 is roughly Year 4.
  • Scotland: Grade 2 is roughly P3 to P4, and Grade 3 is roughly P4 to P5.
  • Australia: Grade 2 is roughly Year 2, and Grade 3 is roughly Year 3, though start ages vary by state.

These are approximate. School starting ages and curricula differ, so the same age can be working on different topics.

Choose by skill, not label

The best way to choose is to look at the skills. If your child is learning times tables, a Grade 3 multiplication workbook fits, whatever their year group is called. If they are working on adding two-digit numbers, Grade 2 material is a better match.

Try a sample first

Download a free sample and let your child try a page. If they finish it easily and correctly, the level may be too low. If they are stuck on most questions, it may be too high. A good fit is challenging but possible.
