How long should home practice be for Grade 2 and 3?

Why short, regular practice sessions work better than long ones for young children, and how to plan ten minutes a day.

Parents often wonder how much extra practice a young child needs. For most Grade 2 and 3 children, the answer is less than you might think, as long as it happens regularly.

Short and regular wins

Ten to fifteen minutes, four or five days a week, is a good target. Children concentrate better in short sessions, and spreading practice over several days helps them remember what they learned.

A ten-minute session

  1. Two minutes: warm up with something easy they already know.
  2. Six minutes: one focused page on the current skill.
  3. Two minutes: check answers together and talk about one mistake.

Stop before they are tired

Ending while your child still feels successful makes the next session easier to start. If they are frustrated, stop and come back to it another day.

Pick one skill at a time

Focus on one area, such as ×4 facts or main idea, for a week or two. Jumping between many topics makes it harder to see progress.
