Summer workbooks for 2nd and 3rd grade: what to look for
How to choose a summer workbook for children going into Grade 2 or Grade 3, and a simple weekly plan that keeps skills fresh without taking over the holidays.
Over a long summer break, many children forget some of what they learned. A little regular practice helps them start the new school year with confidence. The key is choosing the right material and keeping it short.
What to look for in a summer workbook
- Review of the grade just finished, not only new material. Summer is for keeping skills fresh.
- Short pages that take 10 to 15 minutes.
- An answer key, so you can check work quickly.
- Clear instructions that a child can mostly follow alone.
- A mix of math and reading.
- Pages that print well in black and white, if it is a printable workbook.
Which grade level to choose
For most children, choose the grade they have just finished. A child moving into Grade 3 should usually review Grade 2 skills, with a few Grade 3 previews at the end of summer. If the review is too easy, move up.
A simple summer plan
| Day | Activity | Time |
|---|---|---|
| Monday | One math page | 10 min |
| Tuesday | Read together, then one reading page | 15 min |
| Wednesday | Free day | — |
| Thursday | One math page | 10 min |
| Friday | Math fact game or read for fun | 10 min |
That is under an hour a week, and it still leaves weekends and trips free.
Keep it positive
- Do practice at the same time each day, such as after breakfast.
- Let your child choose which page to do.
- Skip days when you are travelling or busy. Consistency over the whole summer matters more than any one week.
